THREE WAY CIRCUIT
June 26, 2006

Introduction:
Let's get out of the bathroom and move to another deficiency that I see on a routine basis. I often find "mis-wired" three way electrical switches, or circuits...but it was only this past week that an Agent was brave enough to ask me to explain that term. So, let's see how much you know (or don't know) about three-way circuits ...

Question:
True or False? A 'three-way" electrical circuit includes three switches.
Answer:
FALSE - "Three-way" circuits include only TWO control switches, and yes the switch component is different than the standard switch. Three-way circuits are the type of circuit typically used to wired a stairway or hallway light fixture, which allows the lights to be turned on / off from either switch, no matter the position of the other switch (up or down / on or off). Also, there are 4-way circuits, and guess how many switches they incorporate? Right, 3 or more. Often times you will see a 4-way circuit on a common exterior deck, where there are 3 three or more access points, and each access point has a light switch. Three-way and Four-way circuits are a complex design, and like most electrical components should be serviced by a competent professional when deficient.
