ELECTRICAL RECEPTACLE PLACEMENT, PART II |
September 25, 2005 |
Introduction: | Sorry the respite between inspection questions, but with the recent holiday week and a well needed vacation for Kate and I - there was a brief lapse between the "weekly" questions. Please accept my apology....Anyhow, in following the line of questions about electrical receptacle placement, the answer to the last question established the required spacing between receptacles in 'habitable rooms'. However is this spacing requirement the same for kitchen countertops? |
Question: | True or False? The National Electrical Code (NEC) requires that electrical receptacles along a kitchen countertop be placed horizontally at six foot intervals. |
Answer: | FALSE - If you think about the criteria used by the NEC to establish the incremental distances between receptacles, you will consider the length of electrical cord on a kitchen appliance. When was the last time you saw a three foot cord on a toaster? To accommodate for shorter kitchen appliance cords, the NEC shortened the distance between kitchen countertop receptacles. The proper spacing is no more than 24 inches apart. |
