SWIMMING POOL and SPA LIGHTS
April 20, 2005

Introduction:
OK, time to move away from Infrared Thermography, and back into standard home inspection questions. As Summer is quickly arriving, more folks will be enjoying swimming pools and spas. For the next few weeks, lets take a look at pool and spa requirements...

Question:
True or False? The underwater lights on swimming pools and spas are required to be ground-fault (GFI) protected.
Answer:
TRUE - Of course the answer is true. It is fairly important to keep the pool users from getting electrocuted. Not only is the pool or spa light required to be ground fault protected, but, all electrical receptacles within 10 feet of the pool must be GFI protected...and I know you already know that ALL outdoor outlets (and kitchen, garage, bathroom and "wet" applications) must be GFI protected, so I don't have to mention that ;-).
