ROOF and ATTIC FRAMING
November 07, 2005

Introduction:
Some Agents have asked me about some of the construction terms that are used when discussing roof framing. The next few issues of Beach to Bayou's Inspection Question of the Week will be designed to help clear up some of the common questions regarding roof / attic framing...

Question:
True or False? There are two basic types of roof / attic framing.
Answer:
TRUE - There are two basic types of roof framing. The traditional method of custom measuring, cutting and assembling roof framing out of 2x4 pieces of lumber is called "Stick (Built) Framing". The more popular method of roof framing which, utilizes factory engineered, designed and assembled components, is called Manufactured Truss Framing. Truss Framing has been used in the United States since the late 1950's, but for special roof designs, some builders still use the traditional method of Stick Built Framing. Most of our local contractors use the factory built system, because of the savings this engineered system offers. Truss Framing allows all the framing components to be assembled as a single "system" to meet a design requirement while individually addressing the necessary load calculations for each specific application. This "factory built" approach reduces time, energy and material waste - enhancing the cost savings to the builder.
